The city was originally named "Acton," but was later renamed Nicoma Park in 1949 after a nearby park. In the 1950s and 60s, Nicoma Park experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Oklahoma City.

Today, Nicoma Park is a quiet residential community with a small-business district. It is known for the annual Christmas parade and light display, which has been a tradition since 1960. The city is also home to two parks - the Nicoma Park City Park and the Beamsley Park.
